Communications Director, New England Health Care Employees Union, District 1199, SEIU
Pedro Zayas is the Communications Director for the New England Health Care Employees Union, where he supports union members in their public relations, policy and strategic efforts. Before joining the SEIU 1199NE leadership team, he was the Director of Communications and Marketing for the Office of Communications and Public Policy at the Hartford Public Schools under superintendents Dr. Beth Schiavino-Narvaez and Dr. Leslie Torres-Rodriguez.
His career in the field of communications kicked off in 1995 as sports reporter for the San Juan Star, eventually netting over 20 years of journalism experience working for major news organizations like ESPN and The Associated Press. With extensive experience in delivering breaking news and developing enterprise feature stories, his professional skills have remained focused on content creation for multimedia platforms, strategic planning, and bilingual treatments in the Spanish language.
An enthusiast of expanding opportunities for youth education and cultural awareness in public service to advance community safety and quality of life, he serves as a member of the board of directors for two nonprofits in Hartford: the Julio Lozada Foundation and Cultura Mosaica.
Pedro holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Communications from the University of Puerto Rico. He has resided with his family in the mainland United States since 1999.
