*If you miss a deadline, you have the option to take a course as a non-degree student. The Graduate School will allow up to 6-credits of non-degree coursework to be transferred (B or higher) into a program later. Please complete the Permission Number Request Form.

Below are instructions to aid you in your application process:

  1. Complete the Graduate School Online Application
  2. Official transcripts for all college-level studies, regardless of whether a degree was awarded. You may upload an unofficial transcript to the online application. Please send all official transcripts to:

  3. International Students
    International applicants who are not native English speakers are also required to complete a test of English proficiency, such as the TOEFL, PTE or IELTS exams. View more details about our accepted tests and minimum scores.

  5. Letters of recommendation
    Three (3) letters are required. You may submit more. Your letter writers should send their letters electronically per the application instructions. If you are unable to submit your letters of recommendation electronically through the ApplyYourself system, you may submit them to the Administrative Program Director using the following methods:

  6. A personal statement addressing your goals and objectives for a career in public policy.
    The statement should discuss why you are interested in the MPP program, what has influenced you to pursue this program, and how the MPP at UConn will help you reach your career goals. It should be 2-3 pages, double-spaced.
  7. Exam Scores
    All applicants are required to submit GRE or GMAT scores. For more information on the GRE exam and to schedule a test date, visit the GRE website. Note: The Department of Public Policy waives the GRE or GMAT exam requirement for select UConn undergraduate students as explained below.
    • If you are a UConn undergraduate Fast-Track student with a B or better grade in all completed MPA or MPP courses and an SAT Math and SAT Reading combined score of 1100 or greater (22 for ACT), the GRE or GMAT score is waived, OR
    • If you are a current UConn undergraduate student or you graduated from UConn within the last three years with a cumulative GPA of a 3.3 or greater, the GRE or GMAT score is waived.
  8. A one-time application fee of $75.00.
    You will need to provide a credit card number or PayPal information to submit your application. Application fee waivers are available for veterans, active service members as well as members and alumni of the AmeriCorps/Vista programs. Please contact the Administrative Program Director at dpp@uconn.edu.

Financial Support

The MPA Program has a limited number of Graduate Assistantships (GAs) that are offered to candidates during the February 15th deadline. GAs are expected to work in the Department supporting research and teaching activities for the first year (August 23 - May 22). GAs are granted for one-year. GAs are paid a stipend, receive a tuition waiver and are eligible for health benefits. (Please note: All GAs at UConn are part of the GEU-UAW Local 6950 Graduate Employee Union.)

To be considered for a GA, please submit your application by February 15 and select “YES” in the online application to the question: “Applying for a GA/Fellowship?” The MPA Admissions Committee makes GA offers based on merit until all openings are filled.

Need-based financial aid is administered through the University of Connecticut Office of Student Financial Aid Services.
