Management Assistant, City of Westerville


Reed Fogle is a 2014 graduate of the University of Connecticut’s Master of Public Administration program. He currently serves as the Management Assistant for the City of Westerville, OH. Westerville (pop. 37,000) is a full service city located in the Columbus metropolitan area. In his position, Reed routinely interacts with all city departments. His primary responsibilities are managing the city’s performance measurement program, assisting in the development of the operating budget & CIP, supporting collective bargaining efforts, and tracking legislative activity in the Ohio General Assembly, in addition to general research and analysis for city departments.

Before his role with Westerville, Reed came directly to the MPA program after earning his B.A. in Politics & Government at Ohio Wesleyan University. Reed chose UConn’s MPA program for its welcoming atmosphere, program size, and student access to top faculty. When reflecting on his first days at UConn, Reed noted “On the first day of class, I knew I had made a good decision. The other students in the classroom were engaging, committed, and friendly.”

While Reed entered the MPA program largely undecided as to a career path, an IPP internship with the Town of Windsor, CT solidified his interest in local government management. He stated that his time in Windsor was hugely valuable to his classroom studies, as well as preparing him for life after UConn. “I was able to put what I was learning to use, in practice, every day I was in Windsor.”

In his current position, Reed uses a great deal of skills and knowledge he acquired through the MPA program. He cited Professor Erin Melton’s Program Evaluation course and the Capstone experience as particularly valuable to him on a daily basis. When asked if he has any advice for current MPA students, he stated that the MPA experience is over quickly and students should value every day they get to spend working with other students and the faculty in an environment so conducive to learning and professional development.
