Expected MPA 2018
Jonilda Brahimi earned a degree in Political Science from University of Connecticut. She was originally attracted to the certificate program in non-profit leadership offered through the Department of Public Policy. After taking a few courses toward the certificate, she decided to pursue an MPA degree thanks to the encouragement and inspiration she received from the Department’s faculty members.
As an international student from Albania, Jonilda enjoys the diversity of the program and its student body. She found the inclusiveness of the program to be incredibly helpful in terms of breaking cultural barrier and succeeding in leadership roles in public organizations. The program has taught her to be open-minded and learn from other people’s unique experiences. Like many students, Jonilda first found it tough to manage schoolwork and personal life. “Everything has been great as far the program goes,” she says, “but with family commitments, it took me some time to figure out a way to maintain work-life balance.”
After graduation Jonilda hopes to make a difference in the community she lives in. She is currently a research fellow at the Connecticut Women’s Education and Legal Fund where she provides support to family law, domestic violence prevention and sex discrimination prevention in employment and education. She was able to use the analytical skills she gained from the classroom to aid her in her research work at the organization she currently works for. This experience opened Jonilda to the idea of working in gender empowerment and youth development.
