MSR Program Overview

The Master of Survey Research (MSR) program at the University of Connecticut provides students with a dynamic approach to the study and practice of survey research. Our high quality academic program is the product of an outstanding faculty and the resources of a research university. The use of practical experiences, combined with theory, analysis, and case studies, make our program job-relevant and intellectually challenging.

The MSR program is typically completed in one academic year. The multidisciplinary curriculum includes elements of public policy, psychology, marketing, political science and sociology. It is designed to provide students with both a comprehensive understanding of the field of survey research and the specific skills necessary to become a successful survey researcher.

The MSR program stresses hands-on experiences. The Department of Public Policy (DPP) conduct surveys for a wide variety of organizations, including academic, non-profit and government institutions.

Faculty members in the MSR program offer both practical and academic perspectives to the study of survey research. They have worked in survey research with major media organizations, government agencies and universities. In addition, each pursues an active academic research agenda in relevant fields such as survey methods, public opinion, program evaluation, and citizen participation.

The MSR program is large enough to attract high caliber students from around the country and internationally, and yet small enough to provide a comfortable atmosphere for personal growth and recognition. In addition, students have a variety of dual degree program options available.

Public opinion, market research and political consulting firms actively recruit graduates from the MSR program. All graduates seeking a job over the past five years have successfully found employment in the survey research industry. Recent program graduates were hired by, among other organizations, Mathematica Policy Research in Princeton, NJ, Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates in Washington DC, Adelphi University on Long Island, and Roper Starch in New York.

Finally, the program's location near the state capitol in Hartford places the students at the heart of the state's commercial and political center. In addition, it is in close proximity to both New York City and Boston.
