Master of Public Administration Program (MPA)

The mission of the MPA program at the University of Connecticut is to prepare students for leadership positions in the public service encompassing governmental and nonprofit agencies and associated organizations. Toward this end, we seek to train students to: 1) analyze problems rigorously, 2) communicate clearly and cogently, and 3) manage effectively and fairly. We strive to teach students the political, economic, quantitative, qualitative, and management skills necessary to thrive in a fluid, diverse, complex, and challenging public service environment. Central to our purpose are faculty efforts to advance the state of knowledge in the field of public policy and management through the highest quality scholarly research and publication. These efforts provide students with an understanding of cutting-edge solutions to public service problems.

The Master of Public Administration program provides students with a dynamic and integrated approach to the field of public policy and management. Practical experiences are combined with theory, analysis, and case studies to make our program challenging and job-relevant. The MPA program prepares students for leadership roles in the public and nonprofit sectors, as well as for private sector positions that are involved with the public service. The MPA program teaches public management, analytical techniques, and public policy through a carefully planned curriculum. The curriculum is organized into:
  • a set of core courses,
  • an area of concentration,
  • a field internship, and
  • a capstone project.
The flexibility of the MPA program allows students to design their specific internships, concentrations, and capstone projects to best meet their interests and goals.
