The Survey Research Alumni Advisory Council
The Graduate Program in Survey Research is pleased to announce the establishment of our first Alumni Advisory Council (AAC). AAC members serve in an advisory capacity to the program, providing valuable feedback that will help our curriculum keep pace with trends in each of the industry sectors we serve. These alumni also play a central role in strengthening our network for the benefit of students, job seekers, and colleagues in the industry. Your 2014-2016 advisory council members are:
Beau Anderson manages the Community Results Center, a specialized unit of United Way of Connecticut that handles research and evaluation projects, coordinates communication and outreach among local United Ways, and publishes timely newsletters and research reports about health and human services issues. Prior to joining United Way, Beau spent two years as an Associate Director of custom market research at YouGov America (formerly Harrison Group) in Waterbury, CT. He earned his MSR and MPA at University of Connecticut in 2011 and his BA in Government from Wesleyan University in 2009. You can see Beau’s LinkedIn page here.
Marcela M. Berland is the founding President and CEO of LatinInsights. An expert in strategic communications and public affairs, she has conducted extensive research in the Americas for more than two decades. Over the past several years, her focus has been on research and consulting in support of corporate marketing and strategic communications in multicultural environments, campaign management and communications in Latin America, the U.S, and Eastern Europe.
In Latin America, Ms. Berland has been a political strategist for Presidents Álvaro Colom of Guatemala, Martín Torrijos of Panamá, Leonel Fernández of the Dominican Republic, Vicente Fox, of Mexico, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez of Costa Rica, Carlos Andrés Pérez of Venezuela, Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada of Bolivia, Jaime Paz Zamora of Bolivia, and Rodrigo Borja of Ecuador. Her work addressed issues of privatization, foreign investment, unemployment, corruption and political and economic reform. In addition, she has worked for Mayor Bloomberg in New York City, NDN, and Governor Rafael Hernandez Colón of Puerto Rico.
Ms. Berland has also conducted many marketing and communications studies in the U.S., Latin America, and Europe on behalf of corporations. In addition, she has worked closely with several news organizations. She has also appeared frequently on CNN en Español, NY 1 News, and other media networks.
Ms. Berland holds a Licenciatura Summa Cum Laude in Political Science and International Relations from the Catholic University of Argentina where she received a Fulbright Scholarship; a Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarship and a Monica Mourier de Archibal Scholarship to study in the US. She holds a Masters Degree in Public Policy and Survey Research from the University of Connecticut.
Rich Clark is the director of the Castleton Polling Institute and Associate Professor of Political Science at Castleton State College, a small liberal arts college in Vermont. He has been working in the field of survey research and public opinion for nearly 20 years. Dr. Clark has authored articles related to public opinion, citizen surveys, and the survey research profession, and he regularly presents research at professional conferences.
Prior to joining the faculty at Castleton in 2011, Dr. Clark ran the Survey Research and Evaluation Unit at the University of Georgia’s Institute of Government for 10 years.
While at the University of Georgia, Dr. Clark worked closely with several state agencies performing data collection and analysis. He also founded and ran the Peach State Poll, a statewide quarterly public opinion poll on policy and economic issues and taught a graduate course in survey research methods.
Dr. Clark earned his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut where he taught classes, worked as a Graduate Assistant then a Research Associate at the Roper Center, and served as the interim director of the Survey Research program in 2000-01 academic year. He has been and continues to be an active member of AAPOR since 1997, having served as president of the Southern chapter (2007-08) of that organization. Throughout his career, Dr. Clark has conducted well over a hundred surveys in almost every conceivable mode, including telephone, face-to-face, mail, web, intercept, exit polls, and self-administered paper surveys in business locations. He has expertise in sampling methodology, survey development, data weighting, and data analysis.

Delanea Davis is the Founder & President of Solstice Strategy Partners LLC, a personal and professional development center located in Tolland, Connecticut.
Delanea has 17 years of professional experience in market research and business strategy. At Solstice, Delanea provides coaching and consulting services to individuals and business professionals. Delanea has a passion for partnering with small business owners to aid in strategic planning, market analysis & business development strategy. She is also a known go-to for career mentoring and self-improvement counseling.
Prior to Solstice, Delanea held various leadership positions at Travelers Insurance, PERT Survey Research, The Hartford, Affinnova and Strategic Research Services. Her recent speaking engagements include: JD Power & Associate Customer Satisfaction conference, Independent Insurance Agent & Broker Association Technology Council Conference, and various guest lectures at UCONN.

Holly Heline Jarrell is Chief Client Services Officer for GfK Consumer Experiences North America. She leads GfK’s Industry and Product units, working closely with these teams to deliver exceptional levels of service to our clients and to drive collaboration with our global product and client teams. She serves on GfK’s North American Executive Action Team and Board.
In 19 years with GfK, Holly has held various roles, including Group Managing Director of GfK Public Affairs & Corporate Communications, where she led the firm’s advocacy, issues management, public opinion, corporate reputation and communications research activities. She also led GfK’s Consumer Trends units in the US and UK, overseeing GfK’s syndicated consumer trends services, ROPER REPORTS US™, ROPER REPORTS Worldwide™ and Green Gauge,™ the nation’s longest running environmental survey.
An expert in generational marketing and consumer trends, she has been principle researcher on over 50 studies on 50-plus adults on behalf of such clients as AARP and Time Inc. She has written and spoken extensively on topics including the family, mature Americans, environmental trends, the workplace, and branding. Her writing has been featured in such publications as Brandweek and The CASRO Journal.
Holly was Global Director, Insights and Research for MS&L, the global public relations firm and part of Publicis Groupe. She created and developed the firm’s insights-based research function. She was also a Senior Vice President of Daniel Yankelovich Group, a premiere “boutique” consumer trends practice. There she provided consulting services to leading US companies by helping them apply emerging research trends to their business objectives.
Holly received her M.A. in public affairs from the University of Connecticut, where she concentrated in survey research. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Connecticut College. She is an elected member of the Market Research Council and is currently President for the organization.
Stephanie Marken is a Methodologist at the Gallup Organization in Washington, DC. As a methodologist at Gallup, Stephanie works with clients to identify the appropriate sample design and methodology to meet their research needs and study objectives. Stephanie also designs data collection instruments, directs qualitative research including cognitive interviews and focus groups, and analyzes and reports data collected in both qualitative and quantitative studies. She is also responsible for continual review of the methodology used to collect data on a daily basis on the Daily Gallup Poll. In this role Stephanie is continually identifying, testing and evaluating new data collection methods to ensure data is of the highest quality standard.
Prior to working at the Gallup Organization, Stephanie was a Research Analyst at Westat in the Education Studies Division where she primarily worked on large federal contracts for the National Center for Education Statistics at the United States Department of Education.
Stephanie received her M.A. from the University of Connecticut Graduate Program in Survey Research in 2009. She graduated magna cum laude from Elon University in 2008 where she obtained a B.A. in Political Science.
