Why choose us

The Department of Public Policy offers several advantages

UCONN is a Top 25 public university. Collaborative research is performed in all 14 schools as well as at our 100+ research centers and institutes. We attract faculty, resources, and attention at a national level.

A practical approach. The use of practical experiences and internships as learning tools, combined with theory, analysis, and case studies in the classroom, make our program job-relevant and intellectually challenging. Online coursework enables greater access and advancement for students.

Problem-oriented courses. We prepare students for the important responsibility of becoming public managers and policy makers by teaching strategic decision-making. Our programs develop the skills needed to diagnose problems, collect and analyze information, plan, choose among policy alternatives, communicate findings, implement programs, and manage change.

Interdisciplinary focus. The program encourages inclusion of relevant university courses in such disciplines as economics, political science, public health, law, education, social work, and business administration.

Diverse students and diverse careers. Our programs serve students with a diverse range of interests and backgrounds and prepares them for a wide variety of occupations. Our graduates work in local, state, and federal government, as well as in nonprofit and private organizations. Our alumni are leaders working as pollsters, city managers, budget analysts, human resource managers, executive directors, program administrators, policy analysts, market researchers, and in many other careers.

The right combination of size and scale. Our program is large enough to attract high caliber students from around the world and yet small enough to provide a comfortable atmosphere for personal growth and recognition. The faculty and staff are accessible to students, engaged in their lives, and committed to helping them advance.

Dual-degree programs. Students have a variety of dual degree program options, including a structured joint MPA/MA in Economics. Students have also simultaneously pursued degrees with Law (JD), International Studies (MA), Public Health (MPH), and Social Work (MSW), among other disciplines.
